Meet the team:

Hannah Fearn

Hannah is a successful newspaper journalist and political podcaster specialising in all things social affairs, and a regular editorial consultant and training provider for Stori.

She even spent four years writing for all of you, as a reporter for the Times Higher Education magazine.

Before Christmas, she worked to deliver a training session in storytelling for student audiences at Kings College University. Here’s what she said about it:

“As a freelance journalist I spend too much time working alone from home, so it’s always a real treat to get out and work with our clients and their teams inside the UK’s best universities.

I love helping them solve the problems they’re grappling with, hearing about their brilliant research and designing new ways to tell great stories about their work.

What’s best is that I always learn something in return too. After meeting the King’s team I’ve been using my own social media channels differently too.

Every session is different, and I love the energy these sessions create.”

What people say about our workshops:

Becky Broadly, Head of student communications and content at Kings College London:

“I thought it was really great and the two of you bounced off each other really well. You brought realism mixed with enthusiasm, and a wealth of knowledge from across the comms sector that enabled us to consider our student communications among the context of the wider comms landscape. I also thought that the whole session flowed really nicely, was really well timed and super bespoke – covering topics and themes that I was able to talk through with Trina and Hannah first.

As an aside, I really liked how you split everyone up throughout the session, making them all move around – it made the session much more interactive and engaging.”

Dr Alexis Paton, Director, Centre for health and society, Aston University:

“Hannah's Pitch and Publish session was an eye-opening game changer for the staff and students who attended. We need to be doing training with her at Aston several times a year. It is not every day you get to hear directly from an editor with this much experience on what they want to see and read from academics, and given the increasing importance of public facing engagement, this type of training is a necessity for all staff.

Additionally, it had a significant positive effect on the confidence and ability of those who attended. It can seem very daunting and intimidating to contact 'the media', but Hannah details in an incredibly accessible way exactly what to do to get your research picked up in the media.”
