How to pitch to a journalist…and get a response

Get your research stories ready to pitch and maximise your news reach

Pitch and Publish Workshop

Join Hannah Fearn, journalist, editor, podcast presenter and winner of the Freelance Journalism Awards 2025 to get your research stories pitch-ready and maximise your news reach.

Hannah writes for The i Paper, The Times, The FT, The Observer and The Guardian, to name but a few.

You’ll learn what editors are looking for, how to pitch well, and common mistakes. You’ll leave understanding how to promote the copy once it’s published and to build a community using social media channels.

Who is this workshop for?

Marketing and comms teams, researchers and academics who need to maximise news reach.

What’s the format of the workshop?

This is a three-hour workshop which can take place in-person or online. It combines teaching, discussion and practical exercises.

Key benefits of our Relatable Research Workshop

  • Secure a commission - find out what editors are looking for, how to pitch well, when to pitch and when to chase, when it fails, what to do

  • Learn how to write a structure for a successful pitch, tips for keeping the reader’s attention, style and tone of voice, overwriting and how to avoid it, and common mistakes

  • Build a community around the research. Once the piece is published, discover best practices to promote the copy, how to write and edit copy for social media channels, and how to engage with online audiences

What our clients say About the Pitch and Publish Workshop

“Hannah delivered the session brilliantly, she was honest, clear and had really useful insights.

We all left feeling really enthusiastic.

It’s given us a lot to work with which is great.

We really appreciated hearing advice/feedback from a journalist who is producing stories every week, it just means we’re getting the most up-to-date info from someone at the heart of the media.”

Beth Jones, Media and PR Manager, Cardiff Metropolitan University

“It was excellent, very high quality and engaging.

Other colleagues have made this comment. People were inspired to take the learning and apply it in different parts of their roles.

I liked the use of their personal experiences and real life examples. Good mix of small and larger group work.

Our experience was very positive and funding permitting, I would work with Stori again.”

Professor Ruth McAreavey FAcSS, Head of Sociology, Newcastle University
